Why All The Fuss About Green Algae?

1. Green Algae Are Very Close Relatives of "Higher" Plants (e.g., Corn and Soybeans!)

Division (Phylum) Chlorophyta (Just Green Algae)

Division (Phylum) Streptophyta (Green Algae + Higher Plants)

Therefore: A fundamental understanding of the evolutionary relationships among all of these green plants, will ultimately provide additional insight into those plants we raise for food and shelter.

2. Green Algae Are Models of Higher Plant Biology

For Example: Chlamydomonas

Therefore: It is important that we use this resource (the green algae) as a "proxy" to understand as much as is possible about the plants that give us food (e.g., rice) and shelter (e.g., oak).

3. Green Algae Are A Source of Economically Important Products

For Example: Chlamydomonas

For Example: Dunaliella

Therefore: It is important that we understand these organisms as they are likely to play a role of growing importance in our lives.
